Regenerative agriculture is essential to sustainability. There are vibrant organic and permaculture projects springing up all over the northeast side of Kauaʻi from Kapahi to Haena. Small family farms, strengthened by collaboration and non-profit groups, are returning Kauai toward self-sufficiency.  Restaurants and farmers markets are helping to build the business. Hunting is an important part of maintaining the watersheds as our wild pig and goat populations are too high. Responsible fishing is part of our natural provision. Kauai is having noticeable success from training programs to farmlands becoming available to the creating of island adapted seeds and sharing of plants to farmers' markets.

Creating Viable Food Production for Kaua`i in the Modern Economy

  • Neighborhood agriculture to again be the norm in communities

  • Strengthen Kauai's branding of an abundant Garden Isle

  • Encourage edible landscaping in public places

  • Strengthen gleaning programs that facilitate the distribution of food

  • Database package to facilitate farm to restaurant availability of produce

  • training the palates to enjoy food crops that thrive in Hawaii

  • Cooperative farming to create large enough volumes for export of viable crops such as papayas and turmeric

Currently, the biggest challenges are

  • Prohition on farm worker housing

  • Food Safety Modernization Act is not well-designed for small scale organic food production

  • The high cost of land makes large scale food production difficult to be economically viable.

  • Reclaiming land that has toxicity from legacy chemicals

  • Obstacles in providing wild meats to the people
